Goyard St. Louis Review
I received a request to review this bag on my Instagram, and I’m happy to oblige! If you guys have any other requests, keep em’ coming on Instagram as that’s where I’m most active.
Why is the St. Louis so popular? At first it may seem like just another coated canvas tote bag… and in a way, it is. I’m going to say out loud what most people won’t: yup, it’s just another coated canvas tote and any real difference in quality between this and other luxury brands is probably negligible. The difference lies in the Goyard brand. The St. Louis is just a touch more luxe, a touch more chic, than e.g. the LV Neverfull.
THERE, I SAID IT. I’m being 100% honest and any marketing admin will probably nod in agreement — with luxury items, there usually isn’t any DRASTIC difference in quality between brands! It’s all about them good vibes… and with Goyard, I’m pickin’ up good vibrations! The colors are fun and bright (I want to add either the green or yellow in the future.) And the attached accessory pouch is a nice touch. Basically, its casual because it’s a tote bag but its luxurious because it’s Goyard. Forgive me for being so boring and repetitive, but I really believe that juxtaposition of casual + luxurious is just soooo perfect!
I bought my St. Louis in 2016, so things may have changed since then… but I remember there being a significant markup if you wanted to buy in the US. I don’t recall specific numbers but I believe I saved close to 40% by buying in London. Furthermore, there aren’t that many boutiques in the US… just two in California (San Francisco and Beverly Hills).
Wear & Tear
The wear is great. I’ve heard that the corners of the bottom of the bag are where wear shows up first — e.g. paint rubs off, the canvas becomes threadbare, etc. But I haven’t had any problems. Other than being (very) wrinkled, I’d say my bag looks pretty new. Note that I don’t use my Goyard as a work bag, though. The only time I stuff it to maximum capacity is during travel — for example, on our last trip to Hawaii I wanted to bring only two bags: the St. Louis and my Chanel Small Flap for evenings. All my regular clothes/shoes/etc. went into my main suitcase, and my "carry on bag" was the St. Louis. (I don’t like to check expensive/luxury goods into my suitcase in case my luggage gets lost.) I put my Chanel Flap in my St. Louis, plus a cashmere shawl to use as a blanket during the flight, my iPad, water bottle, wallet, small toiletries, etc. The St. Louis can definitely be a workhorse when you need it to be :)
Highly recommend every girl to have her own sunny, brightly colored Goyard tote. Especially if you live in a locale with casual beachy vibes like California!
